Created in 1993, the Parco Nazionale delle Foreste Casentinesi is a national park about 45 km from Bertinoro. It covers an area of 368 square kilometres (142 sq mi), on the two sides of the Apennine watershed between Romagna and Tuscany. It is one of the most beautiful and unspoilt regions of Italy enriched with hilltop towns and villages that are delightful discoveries.
The lush nature of the Park is home to the large arch-shaped Ridracoli Dam. Built in 1928 the dam forms a deep green-water lake on the Bidente river and supplies the Aqueduct of Romagna, which covers a great portion of the Region as well as San Marino. In the small old village of Ridracoli a water museum is open for visitors who wish to discover more about these waters. Activities on and around the river include: lake cruises, trekking paths, mountain bike hire, and educational tours.
